Everything you need to know about Fire Damper and Drop testing

Compliance requires that fire damper testing is carried out annually.  A fire damper test requires a visual fire damp and a drop test carried out by an experienced professional.

What is a Fire Damper drop test?

Fire dampers are a crucial part of your building’s fire protection system, which is why we test them so thoroughly. We’re here to keep you safe.

When it comes to fire protection, it’s all about prevention. Fire dampers are designed to prevent the spread of smoke and fire through ductwork, and they do their job by closing when they meet high heat. Fire dampers can also be manually released for testing purposes – our experts will manually release the fire damper and visually check that it closes fully on release. It’s the integrity of that closure that prevents the spread of smoke and fire in an emergency situation.

What is the process to clean a Fire damper?

As your ventilation system is used it will accumulate dust and debris, which could prevent the fire damper from operating.

To clean your fire damper our Engineer would.

1) Close all dampers in the system.

2) Remove any obstructions from the damper.

3) Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, dirt and other debris from the damper.

Your fire damper should be tested by a competent person on completion of the installation and at annual intervals to remain compliant.

How often should my fire damper be tested?

While it’s easy to think that once you’ve installed your fire damper, you’re done with it, that’s not the case. In fact, it’s recommended that all fire dampers be tested by a competent person on completion of the installation and it is required by law at annual intervals.

Why? Because even though they’re designed to work properly, there can be issues with them in some cases. For instance, sometimes when you install a new fire damper, there may be some damage or defects in the product itself—which can lead to problems later on down the road. That’s why testing is so important!

It’s also important because as time goes by (and especially if someone else is working on your system), things can change in ways that affect how your fire damper works—and those changes might not just affect one area: they could impact several units across your building.

How do you gain evidence of fire damper testing?

There are several ways to gain evidence of fire damper testing.

The best way is to have a third party conduct the test, and then request a signed certificate of completion. This is the most reliable method.
